Which LED Ad Do You Prefer?

Samsung

or Honda?

I feel terribly disloyal saying this, because the director of the Samsung viral is a good friend of mine (Hi James, sorry, really sorry, he is a brilliant director, everyone, he did Nike 'Torres' for example, check out his reel at Outsider.TV) but I think I prefer the Honda one.

I like the vibe of it, it feels more real, and doesn't feel like it's trying to explain everything to you.

My correspondent MM's view was: "Love the idea of sheep covered in LED lights, but the post looks like it’s been done on a ZX Spectrum."

Anyway. What do I know. The sheep have 3.5 million views already.

For a great car that has a price thats pretty outstanding, for me the message didn't come across clearly enough. Too much fluff and not enough meat.
Unlike the sheep.

Honda wins hands down.

Anonymous said...

yeah that's my gripe too.
the post prod is a bit weak and maybe it goes on a tad too long.
but james is fookin good at doing virals.

Dear Mr S, are you joking? The Honda one is like a parody of 652 other ads I've seen in the last 20 minutes - everything about it feels pompous and seen before either in other ads or on youtube. The sheep one is funny and has a nice earthy/daft feeling. Well that's what I thought anyroad.

Dear Ben & Matt. We've got a field of about 10,000 cars we can't sell. Any chance of helping us out and finding a use for them....?"

prefered the sheep despite it being a bit long and disjointed. the honda is a great use of leds but seems more like a conventional ad (in a negative way). think samsung could have done a tighter edit but making it too tight, like the honda spot, would have spoilt it.

All I can say is that I showed a couple of 'non industry' mates the sheep viral on the weekend and they loved it. Don't think I'd go around showing anyone Honda's latest...

P.S. Budgets were no doubt slightly different on both, to boot.

I think the sheep one keeps you engaged because you think what the hell are they doing?!! The Honda one i stoppd watching, just doesn't seem as good once you have seen the Samsung one already...

Anonymous said...

Sheep far better.

Anonymous said...

Sheep is better. But they don't tell you what it's for until after the credits, which makes me wonder how many of the 3.5 hits actually made it to the end of video and realised it's an ad... and an ad for TVs of all things. Very few people I bet. And I bet even fewer people associate with a specific brand.

Sheep for sure.

Anonymous said...

sheep all the way! made me smile at least...honda made me yawn

Liam said...

the fact I watched the sheep all the way through and turned off Honda tells the story, I don't even know how that's relevant to the car? It has lights and smiley faces? How many smiley faces can you get in one ad?

The good thing about the sheep one is that we see the process of arriving at the execution, it's interesting to see how they tamed the little buggers. It gets u involved etc... and most importantly ITS CREATIVE.

The honda one…..is that supposed to be a viral? it's the opposite of 'more real' in any case scamp. It's so contrived and looks 100% faked-up. I actually hope they didn't bother going to the trouble of doing it for real because we wouldn't have been able to tell the difference anyway. It would have had a bit more depth if they'd had more fun showing the process and even having a few stumbles at the start. OR at least had an amusing twist on what was creating the images. Only the founding father of Honda (i imagine there was/is one) would be impressed that his little dream team of cars are able to flash their lights on and off. *yawn*

There's nothing real about it.

The sheep one looks so fake! Too fake! Why do the long drawn out shot on the hillside? should have just stuck to the mona lisa.

GOUT-LEGS said...

sorry scamp, the honda one is bollocks.
the way the samsung is 'sponsoring' rather than trying to over take the film is how it has become viral.
i don't think i'd pass the honda one on to anyone.
and in response to another commentator, if only 1% of the samsung viewers were swayed, that's 1% of 3.5 million. million! that's a lot of people. and many of the others will appreciate the fact that it's not all about how great samsung is! but about ingenuity. and for a technology brand, ingenuity is everything.

Sheep :D

Anonymous said...

A youtube view is counted as a unique user who has watched the full video till the very end. So that's 3.5 million separate people/computers who have all seen the whole thing.

I prefer sheep, for many reasons.

Although I did enjoy the Honda one I just feel its been done and from Honda I expected better.

golublog said...

I think the second is short and sweet. But my friend the sheep sheerer was a big fan of the hering one.

Honda = mutton dressed as lamb

Anonymous said...

Sheep poorly done but more watchable. Honda soul-less and REALLY irritating music.

mauroman said...

I think Samsung is brilliant and unconventional. Unexpected enough to be sent to a friend by mail just for fun (how do they call it?.... oh, yes: viral).
Honda is the typical pretty, clean, evergreen idea that make so happy milfs around the world.

Cack On My Gladdis said...

The music on the Honda ad is so fucking cheesy. I've detested Honda ads since that choir one, as they have some really nice looking cars but never want to show them.

Anonymous said...

The sheep one feels human, fun and light-hearted.
The honda one feels cold, ad-wanky, and forgettable.

Sheep win.

Anonymous said...

Sheeps did it for me. Its not something you see everyday. I liked it.

Anonymous said...

How awfully awfully awful. You get it wrong YET AGAIN.

Anonymous said...

you cant beat an ad with animals in it. Sheep win.

Anonymous said...

I think sheep could have been done in a way that you think 'did they really do that', whereas it's just sped up too much and a bit too crap in post. A missed opportunity I feel.

However, I think Honda is poo, so sheep wins, but not necessarily because it's good, just better.

And I am a MASSIVE fan of James' work - Turning Spanish is probably the ad of the 2008 for me. Alright Chicos - Yeah.

Anonymous said...

Sheep... BY FAR.
It's nuts, and it made me smile. And the thought of all those sheep with the lights in the middle of the night... the shepperds and the dogs being an important part of it...
It's way more personal.

Anonymous said...

The sheep is funny and warm. But the Honda is brilliant, well the actual visuals are great. The music/jingle is wack and the voice over sounds like he would be more suited to a euro dental ad.

Anonymous said...

sheep one is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. in a goooooooooooooooooood way.

Anonymous said...

Being a kiwi I love sheep. I love the sheep viral. Not sure how anyone could like Honda. It sucks balls. Unlike sheep, unless you train them.

dk said...

The first comment from 5.05PM said it all.

Sheep.

Anonymous said...

everything's wrong on the honda one. the music, the location, the vo and the cunts in the cars.
a few nutty welsh farmers and some sheep? even if it is a bit too long... it kicks honda's corporate butt.
and can we call led ads done now, please?

Anonymous said...

anon 5.28PM sums it up nicely for me. Though I thought both a bit self-indulgent.

Anonymous said...

the sheep script is better, it's just badly directed, too long for it's own good, shit post and too much of it, unmemorable casting and no obvious link to the product for the average dumbo who likes this to remember.

Anonymous said...

Honda seems to be a technique in search of an idea, replete with some of the required wank-shots of this kind of advertising: the people enjoying themselves oh so much; the juicy 'client mandated' car porn at the end which harpoons all the non-car gubbins before it; even the opening shot of the girl running seems a little...blah. Then there's the music. Oh god, the music. Someone didn't get the memo about the use of a plinky Fallonised track being a hangable offence in 2009.

And what the heck does it all mean?

Anonymous said...

God, I worry if you ever make creative director scamp.
It's all about picking the best idea........you consistently seem to keep picking the wrong ones.
Just look at public opinion.
Or maybe you're just trying to keep in bed with the W&K lot?

Scamp said...

Unless, maybe they're both 'the right idea' - for their respective media. Bear in mind that Honda is for TV, Samsung for tinternet. Perhaps the whole comparison was unfair...

Anonymous said...

6.01, surely the fact that some "non-industry" people liked sheep shows that scamp is right?

Anonymous said...

I dislike the sheep one because it's a brand attempting to pull the wool over my eyes (LOL).

"Hey look how low-fi this is, wow it's all done for real with some crazy farmers and stuff. Shot on a shitty camera, oh wow he made the mona lisa, well that's gotta be real, that's awesome"

No, no, no, no. At least the Honda ad is what it is, an ad, not particularly good ad.

But fucking Samsung and the viral factory can suck my balls for insulting my intelligence and thinking I'd be fooled into believing any of that was real (I'm sure some of the fireworks sections were and maybe some of the pong but that's not enough)

That Mona Lisa thing at the end, you really expect me to believe that? you fucking twat. Do you think I'm a stupid fucking cunt, that some fucking farmer got a sheet of paper and orgonised all those sheep and put all the photos together? Just get out of my fucking face.

What's worse is that 3.5 million people have watched this shit. That's 3.5 stupid fuckers. Maybe the viral factory aren't to blame, if they can trick 3.5 million sheeple (again, LOL) into thinking that was real then good luck to them. Unfortunately those 3.5 million must be so fucking brain dead they'll never be able to afford a £600 TV sitting at home on benefits trolling bebo.

So yeah I prefer the Honda one.

Anonymous said...

I think the budgets would have been totally different. Plus Honda is running dry on "big arty" ideas.

It happens a small little agency has got one up on the bigger guys.

Anonymous said...

either that or your judgement's cack Scamp

Anonymous said...

Sorry scamp, but the media Honda will appear on still doesn't make it a good ad. It's bad.

Anonymous said...

"Perhaps the whole comparison was unfair..." That's the only fair comment to do about that post.

Anonymous said...

Honda: Typical ad wank, looks and feels like I've seen a thousand similar ads, boring, didn't grab me, also felt expected....yawn. oh and the soundtrack, zzzzzzzzzz

Samsung: Brilliant, real sense of fun, highly original, made me smile and feel warm inside, which I haven't done with an ad for years. loved it.

No contest.

Interesting you preferred the Honda ad scamp, did you like because it feels more like an ad to you? slicker production values, looks like it ticks the brief of award juries? 1st rule of advertising? GET NOTICED, are telling me the Honda ad would stick out in an ad break? It's wallpaper. The Samsung ad would stick out like a sore thumb, it's a league above.

Anonymous said...

They're both decent compared to 99% of the cack we spew out.
Well done.

Chillax,

You're an idiot if you think they made that ad to trick people into thinking that they actually made the sheep do those things, it's tongue in cheek, which is what makes it earthy and even more fun.

Anonymous said...

"I dislike the sheep one because it's a brand attempting to pull the wool over my eyes (LOL). "

Or maybe they did just sponsor these guys to make it? I don't know I don't think they're trying to fool anyone, its clearly an advert - the stopmotion/post gives that away.

You seem very angry? So how is W+K these days?

Anonymous said...

The Honda ad reminded of the ariel shots you see on the news of thousands of cars that haven't been bought.

And as Honda have have had to shut their factory, due to no one buying them - I guess they had plenty of spare cars to use...

Dan said...

Is a bit like comparing chalk and err, sheep?

The Honda ad clearly was the most visually appealing but then as you said Scamp it's for TV..

whereas Samsung was by far the more appealing and was pretty funny, despite the rough edit which is fine in a tinternet kind of way.

Best test is whether you would tell someone about it... so Samsung wins hands down

TVF said...

dear angry guy,

thanks for the kind offer, but no thanks. Bit too salty for our liking.

cheers,

the viral factory

Anonymous said...

the sheep one baaaaa none

Anonymous said...

honda stinks of 'let's do an epic ad' where the sheep one is pure entertainment.

Anonymous said...

So Scamp wants a job at w+k now...surely the only reason for his terrible terrible decision?!

Anonymous said...

I think it's unanimous. Everyone loves Sheep. Everyone is bored by the Mega-ads being broadcast on our television sets. For brands to be showing off so much cash in the production of their ads in the current climate is pretty unsympathetic.

Scamp said...

Very happy where I am, 2.13.

Anonymous said...

co'mon, the honda ad is called 'let it shine'. no,no i wont.

Creativestudent said...

I have to disagree, i prefer the sheep. The honda ad is good, but lacks the wow factor and the debate of whether the sheep viral is faked or not - I don't think it is! I posted the sheep viral on my blog and it was a big hit! Amazing how quickly it gained views on youtube! Great blog!

Check out mine if you get a minute Si, im an advertising student at the minute! http://studentad.blogspot.com

Anonymous said...

I don't wanna go in details but:
1. Both "ads" are sooo different, I wouldn't compare them in a first place.
2. I saw the sheep-one as a viral (link that was passed to me by a friend) and i REALLY didn't see SAMSUNG tail in the end. So it's very very amusing, but it's useless for Samsung I think?
